Signs It's Time To Replace Your Bathroom Tiles

If you are thinking of tiling your bathroom, it can be difficult to determine when the old tiles need to be replaced. All tiles fade and go out of style as time passes, making a space appear unappealing and obsolete.

However, how can you tell if it’s time for a change? Let’s see!

Cracked tile

Cracks

Replacing bathroom tiles may be necessary if they have any cracks.

Cracked tiles not only affect the appearance but also have the potential to let water seep into the underlying material, which can eventually cause structural damage.

Green, dirty tile

Stains

If you’ve been struggling to remove stubborn stains from your bathroom tiles even after trying different cleaning methods, it might be time to replace the tiles as a last resort.

This is especially true if the stains have been there for a long time.

Loose tile

Loose or Missing Tiles

Loose or missing bathroom tiles suggest that they were not installed securely onto the subfloor, allowing water to seep underneath and damage the surface.

This can create a hazardous situation, and stagnant water can also lead to mold growth, posing additional health risks.

Wear & Tear

Old and worn-out bathroom tiles may not be able to repel water effectively, making them vulnerable to water damage.

This happens because the grout between the tiles can deteriorate over time, leading to water seepage. Additionally, inadequate sealing can allow water to seep through the tiles as well.

Types Of Bathroom Tiles

When selecting tiles for your bathroom, remember to choose ones that are appropriate for wet areas because some materials cannot withstand moisture.

Glass Tile

Glass tile is a great option for those who want an elegant and reflective surface in their bathroom. It’s available in numerous colors, including custom shades, and can be used for mosaics or to create a focal point on the wall.

However, it’s worth noting that glass tiles are breakable and should be used primarily for walls or low-traffic floors.

That being said, they’re easy to clean and are resistant to liquids and stains. Just be aware that you may need to pay extra attention to the grout lines.

Porcelain & Ceramic Tile

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are excellent options for bathroom flooring because they are made from clay and can be glazed to make the surface waterproof.

You can choose from a variety of colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes to create any design you want, and you can even find tiles with digital images printed on them.

Additionally, these tiles are easy to clean using simple soap and water.

Marble Tile

Marble is a naturally occurring stone that has a refined and classic appearance. It is available in different sizes and can be polished to a high shine, with distinct patterns and veins that provide color to your bathroom.

Nonetheless, it needs to be habitually resealed to avoid stains and etching, and it’s advisable to use non-acidic cleaning agents when cleaning it.

Granite Tile

Our clients often prefer to use granite, a durable natural stone available in various colors and textures. It is perfect for bathroom countertops and high-traffic floors.

To maintain its appearance, it is recommended to clean it with a mild detergent with a neutral pH to prevent streaks and discoloration.

Slate Tile

Slate is a type of stone that is formed from shale and clay under high heat and pressure. It has a naturally slip-resistant texture and is often used for floors, walls, and countertops in larger areas.

It is important to regularly reseal the surface to maintain its shiny or matte finish.

Travertine Tile

Travertine is a type of limestone that consists of multiple layers. It is created when minerals dissolved in groundwater are pushed through the earth’s crust by water.

This stone comes in natural, earthy hues and is often used to cover bathroom walls and floors, typically in larger square shapes.

Terra-Cotta Tile

Terra-cotta tile is not very dense and not waterproof, meaning it is only appropriate for dry regions and is fired at low temperatures. However, if it is glazed, it can be used in bathrooms for flooring or walls.

They usually have a square or hexagon shape and require mild dish soap, water, and periodic resealing for cleaning.

Limestone Tile

Limestone is a type of natural stone that comes in different colors like brown, beige, and yellow, and has a honed surface. It’s a great option for bathroom floors and countertops.

To maintain its quality, remember to reseal it every two years and don’t use acid-based products. Instead, use a tile cleaner that’s meant for natural stone.

At City & Country, we install bathroom tile as part of our bath remodeling project. Here is what you can expect when working with us.

To start a tile installation, planning and preparing carefully is crucial. You should measure the area and determine the tile layout. You must ensure the surface where the tiles will be installed is smooth and level, especially for bathroom floors. Professionals typically use a thin-set mortar to attach the backer board to the subfloor, which helps keep the tiles from cracking over time.

Now that the surface is ready, it’s time to lay the tiles. To ensure even spacing between tiles, professional contractors use tile spacers. They also press the tiles into the mortar using a rubber grout float to ensure they are level and securely attached.

To get a professional finish, they will cut tiles with tools such as tile nippers, a tile cutter, or a wet saw, especially around the edges and corners.

Professionals will complete the installation by adding finishing touches such as baseboards or transition strips to transition from tile to hardwood floors.

At City & Country Contracting, we offer high-quality bathroom tiling services that are built to last. Our skilled team of contractors is proficient in using correct installation methods that result in a flawless outcome.

Bathroom Tiling FAQs

When choosing bathroom floor tiles, it’s important to opt for water-resistant and durable materials. Ceramic, porcelain, and stone tiles are popular choices for bathroom floors due to their ability to withstand moisture and high foot traffic.

While bathroom wall tiles can add visual interest to the floor, it’s generally recommended to use specific floor tiles for better durability. Floor tiles are typically thicker and more resistant to wear and tear compared to wall tiles. So, choosing floor tiles specifically designed for the bathroom floor is advisable.

The amount of wall space you cover with tiles depends on your personal preference and design goals. Generally, bathroom tiles are used in areas that are prone to moisture, such as shower enclosures or around bathtubs. It’s common to tile the entire shower area and about halfway up the remaining walls, but the choice ultimately depends on your desired aesthetic and budget.

Yes, installing bathroom tiles on a concrete subfloor is a common practice. Concrete provides a solid and stable surface for tile installation. However, ensuring a successful and long-lasting installation’s crucial to ensure that the concrete subfloor is clean, level, and adequately prepared before tiling.

Keeping some leftover tiles from your bathroom tiling project for future repairs or replacements is a good idea. Store them in a safe place where they won’t get damaged. Alternatively, you can get creative and repurpose the leftover tiles for small DIY projects like coasters, mosaic artwork, or decorative accents.

In most cases, installing new floor tiles directly over an existing bathroom floor is not recommended. Removing the old flooring is best to ensure a proper and even surface for the new tile installation.

However, if the existing floor is in good condition, free from cracks or unevenness, and meets the necessary requirements, it may be possible to install new tiles on top with proper preparation and using appropriate adhesives.

It’s always best to consult with a professional tile installer to determine the suitability of such an approach.
